Sooners Bow To NDG
Eastview Golden Eagles and Notre Dame de Grace emerged with victories in weekend Interprovincial Junior Football League action.
Eastview bounced back from a 13-point deficit to post a 20-13 victory over Easton Chargers of Montreal while Notre Dame thrashed Ottawa Sooners 25-12.
At Montreal, touchdowns by Bob Bindon, Rick Calouri and Jim Webster plus an Attilio Ciampini conversion shot NDG into a 19-0 lead before Sooners replied on a 15-yard keeper play by John Goudie in the second quarter.
Ciampini hiked the edge to 25-6 with a touchdown in the third quarter.
Interception
An interception by Barry Ardern and a 30-yard dash gave Sooners their other major in the final quarter. It was his second interception in the game. Earlier he'd snaffled and errant pass and scampered 80 yards but failed to score on the play.
Offensively, NDG generated 114 yards passing and 115 rushing. Sooners could only muster 52 in the air and 70 on the ground.

Easton Snaps NDG's String
The well-oiled NDG Maple Leaf machine stalled in key situations last night and the Easton Chargers broke a five-year monopoly on the Metropolitan Junior Football Conference title.
Easton shaded NDG 9-8 in the third game of the MJFC final before a crowd of 3,200 at Jarry Park. The win sent Easton into this Sunday's Eastern Canada semi-final against the Sooners in Ottawa.
Quarterback Roger Zenobi gave Easton a quick 6-0 lead when he hooked up with Fern Aumais on an 82-yard pass-and-run on Easton's first play from scrimmage. Wally Boland added a convert. But that was all Easton could manage on offence until Wally Buono kicked a single in the second quarter to give Easton an 8-7 halftime spread.
The rest of the half belonged to the Leafs. Wayne Terry, a converted lineman, scored on a 31-yard sweep after Rick Calouri put the Leafs on the scoreboard with a 68-yard single which rolled to the deadball line.
Bolland came up with two great defensive plays to preserve the Easton lead. He blocked Gary Butler's convert attempt after Terry's major and then ran Butler's wide field goal attempt out of the end zone on the last play of the half. NDG marched 71 yards to the Easton 13 but time ran out and the Leafs elected to try the field goal on their final play.
"We came up with those big defensive plays," explained Easton coach Jeff Fries. "I was worried because we let them get too much on the ground but we held when it counted."
Buono kicked another single in the fourth quarter but Easton missed it's finest scoring opportunity minutes earlier. Zenobi passed to Mike Maher for 22 yards to give Easton a first down on the NDG seven-yard line. Fullback Ken Sears failed to go anywhere on two runs and Aumais dropped a pass on third down as Zenobi elected to run.
NDG had its chance to score in the fourth quarter. With first and goal from the Easton six yard line, Bob Bindon gained a yard. On second down, a bad exchange in the backfield caused Frank Belvedere to lose six yards and Butler was called upon to try another field goal. The kick was again wide but fell for a single. The Leafs failed to generate any power afterwards and the Easton defense tightened to run out the clock in the last six minutes.
"Maybe we should have used Terry on two runs when we were down there?" said NDG coach Phil Chiarella in a round of post-game second guessing. "But we didn't and they won the football game. At least we can say we didn't go out lying down."
JUNIOR JOTTINGS: Terry ran 13 times for 130 yards, 37 yards more than the entire Easton team.... Webster completed 12 of 22 passes for 101 yards while Zenobi connected on 5 of 12 attempts for 134 yards... Aumais caught four passes for 112 yards... Calouri attempted to pass on a third down situation in the dying minutes of the game but the ball was overthrown.... Easton's top runner, Ken Sears, managed only 36 yards in 12 carries.
